Vermont is a company dedicated to the comprehensive management of urban solid waste
It is an innovative project that seeks to reduce the negative impact that traditional landfills have on the environment and society. We were born from the need to create a responsible alternative for co-processing MSW in the Dominican Republic, giving a responsible final destination to all MSW in the Eastern region, we promote recycling in our country and we help solve the health problem of nearby communities.
Core Values
Waste Recovery Plant
At our Recovery Plant, we classify urban solid waste (USW) and compact or shred it by type of material; whether cardboard, plastic, aluminum, metal, among others. Then, we ensure that the life cycle of these products is fulfilled by reintegrating them into the local or international market, and in this way we promote the circular economy.
- Classification of MSW.
- Individual compaction by type of material.
- Reintegration of materials into the local and international market.
Landfill
Our Sanitary Landfill allows us to deposit the MSW in a hole previously protected by a 2 mm geomembrane. It has drainage channels to prevent leachate from seeping into the subsoil. It also has chimneys that retain greenhouse gases such as methane. In the landfill, the waste is classified to be co-processed in the recovery plant and the final waste is distributed, compacted by heavy equipment and finally covered with caliche and/or a high-resistance plastic fabric to prevent contamination.
- It is an engineering project based on international standards.
- Pre-treatment of the site for its suitability.
- Control works.
- Treatment systems: Capture of leachate and biogas (treatment and energy use).
- Specialized equipment: bulldozers and waste compactor loaders.
- Soil and water control studies.
How does it work?
Once the area has been selected and the trench has been dug, the entire bottom and sides must be waterproofed, leachate drainage pipes and greenhouse gas chimneys must be placed. After this structural preparation, the waste disposal process begins. Solid waste is transported and dumped into the landfill by truck. It is then waterproofed with a layer of canvas and covered with sediment.
It is at this point that the decomposition of the material begins. Very slowly, leachates are created and channelled away. These liquids create the gases that come out of the chimneys. Covering each layer of waste is a procedure that must be carried out daily and in which a thickness of 25 centimetres must be maintained. This allows the isolation of odours.
Management Team
We have managed to co-process solid waste in order to convert it into raw material and offer it a new opportunity for use.
